EWB Training Workshop Series - Masonry Seminar Speakers Needed
Do you
know someone who could speak to licensed professional engineers at a seminar
on a topic related to sustainability? If so, contact Project Team Members Needed
With our
current project in El Salvador nearing completion, we are organizing the next
hopeful project in El Salvador. Currently the best opportunity is a
community where another NGO had to give up on a well drilling halfway
complete. We are looking at the possibilities of drilling a well and
providing a water distribution network to this community. If you are
interested in working on a new EWB project, contact Jose Moreira
(vicepresident@ewbhouston.org).
The team is currently looking for professionals of all different backgrounds. Web Designer Needed
Professional Engineers Needed
EWB-USA
is seeking professionals to help on the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC)
for the South Central Region. The TAC works to provide oversight over the
projects at EWB. You would be reviewing project applications, implementation
plans, and helping to write technical guidelines. The time commitment
is between 5-15 hours a month, depending on how much you want to take on,
most of which can be performed on your own schedule. We are seeking
professionals with backgrounds in Public Health, Medicine, all fields of
Engineering, Construction Management, Economics, Anthropology, and those with
specialized cultural expertise, such as being a native of an
EWB project country. If you are a busy professional who wants to be involved
and is looking for something that will work with your schedule, please
contact AnnMarie Spexet at aspexet@gmail.com
for more information. Corporate Sponsorship

The
Bolivia project continues work on the detail design of a pipeline,
pumps, and water tanks for the communities of San Nicolas, Villa Oropeza, Cobol, Achumani, and Calamarca. At the last team meeting two workfronts were identified: 1) sizing and locating
the water tanks in the communities, and 2) developing a business relationship
with the municipal water company. The first objective is necessary to
obtain a detailed cost estimate for our funding partners and the second
objective will guarantee that sufficient water is
available when the tanks and pipeline are in place. Smaller teams are
working independently on each objective and report back to the group at
biweekly meetings. If you have experience with water tanks, pumps, and
pipelines and are interested in working on the Bolivia project please contact
The
Colonia Esmeralda project is nearly complete. After a successful final implementation
trip last May, there is only one goal left to achieve. During the
implementation trip, it was noted that the community member in charge of
water chlorination was using pool chlorine. The project team
immediately began working with the community to find a bulk supplier of
chlorine powder suitable for drinking water purification. Recently,
community members have located the proper type of chlorine.
Unfortunately, it is in small containers costing much more per volume than
large containers. The project team continues to work on the final task
of finding bulk chlorine.
Last May,
members of the EWB-Rice student chapter began constructing a straw bale
health clinic in Bernadino Diaz Ochoa,
Nicaragua. Unfortunately, heavy rains prevented them from
completing the construction during their implementation trip.
Fortunately, the community has been finishing it without EWB members
present. The picture below was taken in early September. Since
then, the community members installed the doors and windows.
Doctors have already been using the clinic during their visits to the
community. EWB-Central Houston members have been working in partnership
with EWB-Rice to add water and electricity to the clinic, modelling our designs off of rainwater cachement and solar-powered lighting systems that were
installed in the community center next door. The materials for these
systems have been purchased. Ideally, the community members will
complete the installation without us. If they are unable to, we will
work with them to install the systems this December, shortly before the
clinic's official grand opening. Go here
for pictures May's partial implementation trip. |
